FROM THE FIELDS: CONTINUED HEAT ON THE WEST COAST

October 6, 2026

California’s Salinas and Santa Maria Valleys continue to experience heatwave conditions that peaked over the weekend. Coastal areas saw temperatures in the upper 90s and up to 107° was recorded further inland on Sunday, September 4. Over the next several days, temperatures will drop, but inland temperatures will remain above seasonal norms.

This latest heat spike will continue to stress row crop vegetables that are already heavily impacted by previous heat events, as well as disease and insect pressure. Expect variable quality and tight supplies for the rest of the growing season.

In the coming weeks, Markon inspectors will have a better picture of the quality and supply outlook for the upcoming Arizona/California desert season. Until then, Markon inspectors will continue to monitor Salinas, Santa Maria, and Huron supplies closely and update as needed.

Ordering for quick turns is recommended, and as always, strict cold-chain management is critical to maximize quality and shelf life.
