FROM THE FIELDS: CALIFORNIA’S SALINAS VALLEY HEAT WAVE

June 21, 2022

California’s Salinas Valley is experiencing a heat wave that is forecast to last through the end of June. Daytime highs will return to normal temperature by the first week of July. Markon Inspectors are working closely with our suppliers to ensure only the strongest quality product is packed in our brands. Daytime highs will range from the low 80s to high 90s, and even rise into the triple digits in the Southern part of the valley.

Potential quality defects from the heat include:

  • Bolting
  • Internal burn
  • Increased insect pressure
  • Growth crack
  • Rib blight
  • Seeder
  • Sun burn
  • Sun scalding

Markon suppliers will harvest in the early hours of the morning to avoid the peak temperatures for both their production crews and raw product.

Maintaining the cold chain throughout distribution is critical for maximizing quality and shelf-life.
