FROM THE FIELDS: ARIZONA/CALIFORNIA DESERT REGION QUALITY CHALLENGES

February 25, 2022

The Arizona/California desert region has been experiencing erratic weather over the past couple of weeks. Strong wind gusts, light rain, and freezing temperatures have challenged quality over the past two weeks, and now the weather forecast calls for temperatures from mid-70s to the low 90s starting Saturday, February 26 running through all next week.

This irregular weather pattern is creating quality challenges that will be with us for the next few weeks, and maybe until the end of the season:

    • Light case weights
    • Fluctuating internal density
    • Uneven lettuce size
    • Epidermal blistering/discolored peeling
    • Fringe burn
    • Rib blight
    • Growth crack
    • Insect pressure

Markon inspectors will be monitoring quality and will update members with the latest reports.
