UPDATE: MEXICO TROPICAL STORMS RACHEL AND SIMON

Tropical Storm Rachel is forecast to reach Northern Baja on late Saturday, October 10. Tropical Storm Simon is expected to strengthen into major hurricane strength and approach west-central Mexico this weekend, posing the greater produce risk from heavy rain, flooding, and mudslides.

Tropical Storm Rachel

  • Maximum sustained winds were 70 mph as of 8:00 a.m. PDT
  • The storm is forecast to reach Northern Baja late Saturday at tropical-storm strength
  • The Ensenada/San Quintín corridor may see rain, gusty winds, localized flooding, field-access issues, and transportation delays
  • Southern California & Arizona impacts remain uncertain; however, expect inclement weather by early Sunday morning
  • Baja-grown tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, squash, strawberries, and green onions may face brief harvesting or loading delays, depending on the final storm track

Tropical Storm Simon

  • Maximum sustained winds were 65 mph as of 9:00 a.m. CST; however, this storm is expected to become a Category 4 as it approaches Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco this weekend
  • NOAA/NHC forecasts 8 to 12 inches of rain, with isolated totals of 15 to 25 inches in Colima and Michoacán through Sunday
  • Flooding, mudslides, road closures, and harvesting delays are the main risks
  • Initially, avocados and limes (especially key limes) will be the primary items to monitor
  • The storm is expected to weaken and continue north towards Sinaloa, which could affect young plants for the winter tomato, pepper, cucumber, and squash seasons
