Supplies of asparagus and green onions from Mexico are further tightening due to Hurricane Polo. Heavy rains and high winds slowed or canceled harvests and power outages reduced packing hours.

Asparagus

• Northern Baja, Mexico production is winding down; the season is expected to conclude in the next two to three weeks
• Production in Southern Baja, Mexico is ramping up; Southern Baja will serve as the primary growing region in Mexico through December
• In the near term, asparagus supplies will be even more limited, especially jumbo and large sizes as harvests are curtailed or canceled
• Initial long-term reports for Southern Baja indicate excessive rainfall will bring the crop on faster, providing temporary supply increases, but likely bring the season to an early close

Green Onions

• The primary growing region of Mexicali, Mexico was hit with heavy rain
• Most fields became too wet to harvest, and several packing sheds were without power for most of the day; power has since been restored
• Some growers will resume harvest tomorrow; the balance will resume Wednesday after fields properly dry out
• Supplies will rebound towards the end of the week as growers are able to restock the supply pipeline
