FROM THE FIELDS: CENTRAL CALIFORNIA GROWING REGION – WARM WEATHER

June 10, 2026

A stretch of warmer weather is expected across the California growing regions through the middle of next week. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 70°s near the coast, while areas in Southern Salinas Valley, as well as Santa Maria, could see highs ranging from the mid-80°s up to triple digits.

A low-pressure system passing to the north should bring temperatures closer to average through next weekend and into the following week.

Markon inspectors are monitoring row crop supplies carefully. These conditions, along with quick temperature swings, can lead to quality and shelf-life challenges, including:

  • Bolting/seeder
  • Bottom rot/decay
  • Bruising/soft texture in strawberries
  • Dehydration/wilting
  • Discoloration/yellowing leaves
  • Hollow core and pin rot in broccoli
  • Inconsistent plant growth
  • Increased disease/plant virus pressure
  • Increased insect pressure
  • Internal burn/tip burn
  • Shortened shelf-life in commodity and value-added lettuce and tender leaf items

As always, keeping product cold throughout the supply chain is key to protecting quality and maximizing shelf-life.
