Please click here to view a Markon Live From the Fields video about the rise of insect pressure in lettuce and other row crops from the Arizona/California desert growing region.
- Markon inspectors have observed a steady rise in insect pressure in lettuce over the past two to three weeks
- Consistently warm temperatures and lack of any significant freeze events have created favorable conditions
- Although growers take step to control insects, they cannot eliminate them completely
- Lettuces with an open frame such as green leaf and romaine are more susceptible to elevated insect presence
- As temperatures continue to rise and the desert growing season winds down, insects will naturally be drawn to the production acres that remain
- Fully processed items (chopped or shredded iceberg or romaine packs) are more likely to be free of insects compared to commodity or lightly processed items
- Markon inspectors are monitoring conditions closely and working with growers to select the best lots available for Markon orders
