FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT REGION QUALITY & WEATHER UPDATE

December 23, 2025

Although temperatures continue to be above normal for this time of the year, we are seeing improved quality and weights across the Arizona-California desert region in both commodity and value-added items.

The forecast is calling for rain this afternoon, which will impact the desert growing region. Storms are expected to persist through Thursday, December 25; total rain amounts will vary depending on the area. Yuma and Imperial Valley are expecting between .15”-.25”; the Coachella Valley could see upwards of 1”.

After the rain event, it is possible to see quality challenges such as:

  • Dirt/mud in finished packs
  • Mildew pressure
  • Pre-mature pinking
  • Shorten shelf-life
  • Waterlogged product

Muddy conditions will delay harvesting; however, growers have been packing ahead of the rain  to secure orders.

Markon inspectors will continue to monitor conditions and will update further in the days ahead.
