Update: Strawberries

February 15, 2017
The Oxnard and Santa Maria, California growing regions are expecting another series of storms to hit Thursday evening, February, 16 that will continue through next Wednesday, February 22. Many growers will not be able to harvest in the muddy/wet field conditions; availability will be extremely limited. Markon recommends loading out of Florida or ordering Mexican fruit out of South Texas next week for better coverage and quality.
  • Markon First Crop Strawberries are not available; Markon Best Available and packer label are being substituted due to rain
  • Post-rain quality and low yields are major concerns in the Oxnard, California growing region as growers cull rain-damaged fruit
    • Bruising, decay, water damage, wind scarring, and white shoulders are persistent problems
    • Quality is good in Florida and Mexico
  • Expect tighter supplies through next week
  • The Mexican season is past peak production; volume will begin to fall, ending the season over the upcoming weeks
  • The overall market is steady to slightly lower than last week; California prices remain the highest
