UPDATE SUMMARY: Week of April 13, 2015

Asparagus prices are rising due to tight domestic supplies and strong demand; stocks will remain scarce and high prices will persist through Mother’s Day. Bell pepper, cucumber, and squash production will move north on both coasts over the next four to six weeks; overall reports indicate a smooth transition with sufficient supplies. Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Cauliflower Florets reached first-tier trigger pricing this week; expect better supplies next week. 



  • The Mexican season has ended, shifting demand to domestic supplies; California stocks remain tight
  • Prices are rising; demand is strong
  • Quality is very good
  • Supplies will remain scarce; high prices will persist through Mother’s Day



  • Stocks are ample in California and Mexico

  • Quality is excellent in California; Mexican quality is good
  • Expect Peruvian fruit to become available in May


Bell Pepper, Cucumber, and Squash Harvesting Transitions

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Green and Red Bell Peppers are available
  • Green bell pepper supplies will be limited in Florida for the next three to four weeks; stocks are tight in Mexico and Texas as well
  • Red bell pepper supplies out of Nogales, Arizona are declining; California red bell peppers will be available in the Coachella Valley by mid-May
  • Yellow squash and zucchini prices are low, but may increase as the harvesting transition approaches
    • Quality is excellent
    • Florida production is limited, but harvesting will begin in Georgia in two to three weeks  



  • Due to recent cool and wet weather in Mexico and Texas, consistent supplies remain delayed in the southern growing regions
  • Markon recommends loading in Idaho, Oregon, or Washington for best quality and price

  • Supplies are extremely limited
  • Quality is good
  • Expect more plentiful supplies next week
