UPDATE: Melons

September 28, 2018

The California Westside growing region in the San Joaquin Valley is beginning to wind down. Supplies are tightening; large sizes are becoming limited. Prices are rising, especially for cantaloupe. Markon First Crop (MFC) Cantaloupes and Honeydews are available.

  • California’s Westside growing region will continue for a few more weeks, through approximately mid-October
    • Yields are decreasing at the end of the season
    • Cantaloupe sizing has shifted from large to small/medium; 9-count fruit will be very limited through the end of the season
    • Honeydew sizing is favoring 6- and 8-count fruit; 5-count melons will be limited until the season ends
  • Regional melon crops across the country are winding down, causing demand to shift to California and prices to rise
  • Mexican and offshore stocks are a few weeks away from entering the market
  • The Arizona/California desert growing region will begin in a limited way the week of October 8
  • MFC Cantaloupes and Honeydews will be available from the desert region
  • The crop is expected to favor large sizes such as 9-count cantaloupe and 5-count honeydews
  • Desert supplies will ship through Thanksgiving, at which point the crop will transition 100% to Mexico and offshore regions for the winter
  • Expect higher prices for the two weeks
