UPDATE: GREEN LEAF AND ROMAINE
September 04, 2020
Green leaf and romaine markets are climbing.
Demand is strong
Salinas Valley’s recent mid-August heatwave reduced green leaf and romaine supplies; weather-related defects, such as internal burn, seeder, sun scalding, and dehydration are limiting harvestable acres
Another heatwave will move into California’s Central Coast this weekend and persist into early next week, further straining plantings and reducing yields
Additionally, green leaf and romaine yields have been affected by soil-borne diseases including Sclerotinia and Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV)
Expect elevated markets over the next two to three weeks at minimum
