UPDATE: Easing Prices in the Desert Growing Regions

February 17, 2016

Prices are easing this week in the Yuma and Imperial Valley growing regions. Recent warm temperatures are promoting growth. Severe storms affecting the Northeastern U.S. are weakening demand while desert production increases, creating a surplus of many commodities including, broccoli, cauliflower, green leaf, iceberg, and romaine. Expect a supply exceeds market for the next 7 to 10 days.

Broccoli and Cauliflower

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Broccoli and Markon Essentials Cauliflower are available
  • Broccoli supplies are abundant in Arizona, California, and  South Texas
    • Demand remains flat
    • Prices are steady at low levels
    • Quality is excellent: heads are dark green with even bead shape
  • Cauliflower volume will increase through the weekend
    • Warm weather will increase stocks
    • The market will ease into the mid- to low teens by early next week

Green Leaf and Romaine

  • MFC Green Leaf and Romaine are available
  • Supplies are increasing due to this week’s warm temperatures
  • Weak demand and increased production will keep markets at steady to lower levels for the next 7 to 10 days
  • Quality is excellent
  • Romaine head size is medium-plus to large; heads are cupped with minimal defects
  • Some heat-related issues may increase due to multiple days of high temperatures in the desert growing regions

  • MFC Lettuce is sporadic due to low weights and odd size; Markon Best Available will be substituted as necessary
  • Size and density is inconsistent due to freezing conditions in December and January
  • Warm weather is expected through the end of the desert season; expect increased growth and regular sizes
  • Cold, rainy East Coast weather combined with increased desert region supplies will weaken prices
  • Temperatures as high as 91° are forecast in Yuma, Arizona this week; these conditions could result in heat-related quality problems
