UPDATE: Desert Growing Region Prices
March 16, 2017
Lettuce and leafy green prices continue to climb. The market is expected to remain in a demand-exceeds-supply scenario for the next three to four weeks.
Unseasonably warm weather in the desert region continues to push harvests further ahead of schedule
The desert season has one to two weeks left; expect limited supplies through early May, as the Salinas Valley will be able to harvest enough volume to cover demand
While recent Salinas Valley temperatures are increasing, the cold and rainy weather California experienced last month has taken its toll on crops; the first plantings are scheduled to be harvested in late March/early April
Production will start in the Central Valley/San Joaquin Valley region in a light way next week; insect pressure and lighter weights will keep overall supplies limited at the beginning of the season
Markon expects a sharp rise in prices over the next ten days; contract and value-added triggers will be met.
