FROM THE FIELDS: Rain in Salinas & Santa Maria, CA

April 28, 2015

The Salinas/Watsonville and Santa Maria, California growing regions have received .30 of an inch of rain as of 6:00 AM PDT Saturday, April 25.

Growers have been packing ahead in anticipation of the rain, but light-to-moderate harvesting delays may occur for any orders packed today. Shippers are on standby, but few have cancelled harvest due to poor field conditions. Markon inspectors will be monitoring crops for any of the following rain-related quality concerns:

  • Bottom rot
  • Bruising in strawberries
  • Higher respiration rates in value-added items
  • Increased mildew pressure
  • Pin rot in broccoli
  • Premature pinking
  • Shortened shelf life
  • Soft texture in strawberries
  • Water damage in strawberries
