FROM THE FIELDS: Epidermal Peeling in Romaine Lettuce
January 08, 2018
Please click here to view a Markon Live from the Fields video about epidermal peeling that has developed in lettuce items from the Arizona/California desert growing region.
Freezing temperatures in late December caused epidermal blistering in romaine and other lettuce crops
The warmer weather that followed has led to epidermal peeling that is difficult for harvesting/processing crews to eliminate
Commodity and value-added romaine items will exhibit varying levels of epidermal peeling for at least two weeks
This week’s light rain will potentially cause decay to develop on leaves that are experiencing epidermal peeling
Markon inspectors are monitoring supplies closely and will update further as needed
