There is an old adage that says that truth fears no questions. Yet, when it comes to impressing a customer, it is tempting to go along with something you actually do not agree with just to make them happy in the moment. Sometimes little white lies seem easier to use than the hard truth…but be forewarned, reputation is everything in business, especially in the close-knit produce industry.
At Markon, we understand that the relationships we have with our customers must be built on trust in order to last. That’s why we encourage our staff to speak the truth and to acknowledge when we don’t know an answer. It’s always better to be humble, admit when we are unfamiliar with a product or price and ensure them that we’ll find the solution and get back to them as soon as possible.
It’s this philosophy that has kept us at the forefront of the produce world for over 25 years. We started back in 1985 with a strong foundation of trust by telling the truth and haven’t wavered. Customers may get frustrated or angry under a variety of circumstances…that’s the nature of the business world. But as long as we hold onto our morals and convictions, in our experience this keeps relationships strong.
