Please click here to view a Markon Live From the Fields video about erratic weather and other factors that are causing end-of-season challenges for row crop vegetables in California’s Salinas Valley.
- The Salinas Valley season will wind down over the next two months
- Typical end-of-season challenges, such as insect and disease pressure, have been rising
- A pattern of warm, humid conditions followed by rain, has brought on additional challenges such as:
- Bottom rot/decay in lettuce crops
- Bruising, soft texture, and pin rot/decay in strawberries
- Dirt/mud in field-packed items
- Inconsistent case weights
- Increased mildew pressure
- Pin rot in broccoli
- Premature pinking in commodity and value-added lettuce packs
- Shortened shelf-life potential
- Another chance for light showers is forecast through Thursday, October 3
- Markon inspectors are working with suppliers to secure the best product for commodity and value-added items
