Ruben Ortiz

Harvest Supervisor, Foothill Packing
When I wake up in the morning to go to work, I feel a little sleepy, but I get to the fields and feel happy and satisfied. My heart feels a lot of pride and passion when I see the sun rising at dawn over the fields of romaine about to be harvested. It’s like I’m coming home to a friend. Also, it gives me a lot of pleasure to see my coworkers because I know our team is going to harvest a quality product that many people are going to eat. I feel that I will keep doing this job with a lot of pleasure for many more years.
“As a young child, my grandmother had a garden in our backyard and while she was cooking, she would ask me to go pick jalapenos, tomatoes, and squash. That garden made a big impression on me and my life. I believe that is where my passion for food and fellowship developed. On Sundays our family would gather at my grandparents’ home to eat and laugh. I believe that no matter what happens in life there is no better feeling than gathering around the dinner table with your family and friends.”
